Pulchritude in Petaluma

The funniest part of the play, "Real Women Have Curves," takes place when all the ladies at the sewing factory strip down to their underwear on a hot night and finally approve, together, of their voluptuous and imperfect bodies, stretch marks, bulges, heavy breasts, and all. Before leaving for my rehearsal tonight I finally screened the DVD in its entirety. Nothing to me was more moving - as in tear ducts overflowing - than that peeling away of garments in that L.A. garmento world scene. The mother-daughter love-hate dynamic, the fact of young Ana so wanting to get into Columbia U in the film and into NYU in the play (dontcha love the HBO upgrade?)...there were details that just kept building and grasping at my inner psyche. My father went to Columbia on a scholarship, and, I'm an unvarnished NYU grad.

Tonight's rehearsal went smoothly and director Joe helped us understand where the good moments awaited for us to rise from our stools and strut our stuff a bit, beyond the basic staged reading. No, we won't be stripping down to our underwear, ladies and gentlemen, but we will be body conscious. The ending is absolutely delicious.

We actors left with three hot pink and black posters apiece to put up in our neighborhoods, a bunch of Dia de los Muertos in Petaluma postcards to mail out, and a mini photo session behind us. Victoria from the local paper did a photo reportage as our rehearsal began.

There's a possibility that this show may yet come to Oakland in late October. You'll be the first to know, dear readers.
