"The House of Blue Leaves" rehearsal tonight had a surprise - our director was not there. Sorry to hear Margot had injured her knee. So, Penny, the stage manager, took over. Seems we did well, because timing improved by 5 minutes (I hate the way this reminds me of the local hospital doc-to-patient timing!). We were all encouraged to be "off book," but 3 out or 4 of us clutched our books. I admit to having read from mine on occasion, suddenly panicked that I might miss a cue. I was right. By trying to be off book, I got a few lines garbled.... It's not necessarily smart to do this too soon, especially when we only have half the cast at the rehearsal, and the rest of the lines are read by doubles or Penny - damned confusing! I must say I am blown away by our star, Nick Brunner, who plays the son, the "altar boy" (NOT!) Ronnie. Mister Monologue, you rock! Killer lines, beautifully delivered, Nick.
Still 3 out of 4 of our cast members were not at this rehearsal, and it's almost impossible to get lines right and timing correct when you are not dealing with a warm body or even an increasingly familiar voice. So, I asked about the 3rd nun. She should be with us on Monday, goddess willing.
I want us to rehearse as a threesome and get our timing down, like "The Supremes," in movement, at least.
"Ave Maria!"
