Another Great Review of "Firstborn"

L to R: LaToya Johns as Daja, Lisa Carlson as Sister Jackie, and Claudia Walker as Sister Rachelle. Photos by Eric Chin.

I was moved by "Firstborn," Tiffany Golden's sensitive exploration of grief, manipulation, and hypocrisy, the quest for family unity, and the healing power of truth-telling. LaToya Johns and Tatiana Monet give beautiful, nuanced performances as sisters mourning their mother's death in their own ways--one sister clinging to the past and the other raging against and distancing from her family. Clarence Johnson, Jr. and Andre dos Santos Morgan also give powerful performances as wounded men--a husband longing for his beloved wife and a pastor violating the trust of everyone around him. Lisa Carlson displays perceptiveness and versatility in her multiple roles as a high school principal, a doctor delivering frightening news, and a devout churchgoer stunned by betrayal. Kudos to the entire cast and crew!
