A long, long ride to a long Long Beach

Drove down for a Saturday afternoon L. A. audition for the role of an older Mexican woman in a short film. Made it to Hollywood in 6 hours, then it took another hour to navigate traffic in a construction zone by the Hollywood Bowl. The charming handsome casting director has done lots of TV roles as the bad guy with an Italian or Latin accent. The director is young, Middle Eastern. They wanted my character to speak Spanish - I had to translate some of the script while auditioning. Went well, but, since I have not yet heard back, I doubt it's mine, and goddess knows one has no idea about the competition. The casting studio - a warren of small rooms I've been to before, near La Brea and many homeless denizens, allows you to see your audition for a fee... The preliminary freeze frames are free and I think I've seen enough for now.

Sunday I auditioned in Long Beach for a debut play about a call center scam and rivalries between desperate women. It won a contest to be produced at The Berubians Theater. Quite an interesting adventure...Those of us who showed up early got a little break, so another actress and I went out for coffee together. A true Hollywood moment! She has been around a long time and is well connected. I'm talking names. We had a lot in common, too, including that we both had diplomat dads and have just signed with commercial agents and are looking for theatrical representation. We returned to the audition venue to find out we could be cast against type. Callback soon.

Beautiful weather down here with a little rain thrown in...Lucky me, my cousins have invited me to stay with them, and treat me like royalty. Lots going on in Long Beach - a women's conference attended by Michelle O, an Alzheimers' walk led my the governor's wife.

This town is lot more more than a "Drill baby, drill!" zone, after all.
