Visualize a see-saw with three people on one side and the cast and crew of "The Little Nebbish" on the other. What a strange opening night! We were supposed to rehearse at two this afternoon, but lack of communication between the keeper of the key and the co-director/stage manager disallowed this. We actors - if we checked - found out midday by email. I was relieved, since I could use the time for a walk on the beach with my pre-recorded script on the mini Sony.
Can you believe these things happen in 2010 with all the various modes of communication available to the typical Californian?
We were not allowed into the theater til 6:30 PM and we went on at 8 PM. Three people in the audience, and a cast relieved to finally get their cue-to-cue tech/dress rehearsal on opening night!
My character, Heather, is quickly becoming a sort of Valley Girl hair flipper....Who knows who she'll be by next week.
As a cast, we totally came together, protected one another, ad libbed where necessary, and got the author's story across. Tech was cool. Our mood was upbeat as we left the little theater.
As I sat in my rental car waiting for the theater doors to open tonight, I got a text from my agent inviting me to another audition tomorrow on Sunset Boulevard. I'll be there, an upscale Latina manana.
