Mercury is still retrograde, right? We should expect nothing to go smoothly at times like this, sometimes it's that season where stuff gets done twice, or wrong, or takes forever to be resolved. Well, I just had to laugh at this little episode: I've been coaching a fellow thespian in how to gather her wits, her background, resume, photos, etc., to pitch to new agents. She's pulled her stuff together, and this included soliciting former directors on projects to write her a nice review or one-liner regarding her work, something she could use in her pitch letter. So, with that as background, a couple of days ago, I reached out to director Josh and asked if he could send me a few words regarding my VO narration recording the other day. He was happy to do so, and wrote something sweet and succinct, which I appreciate.
"It was everything I could have wanted in an experience, you were warm, funny and most of all your willingness to try all sorts of different takes and styles , really made the recording process a blast as well as giving us the perfect amount of choices to play with."
Followed by this: he was sorry to tell me he has decided, as director, that the film does not need that narration after all. That it was doubly hard to not use it since I had done such a fabulous job! That's what we used to call a backhanded compliment, right? At the end of the film there is a minor VO that he will keep, however, so it's not a total loss.
