Backstage on opening night : Al Badger (Escartefigue), Nicolas Poler (The Fireboy), Jim Gasperini (Panisse) and Nastassia Maltsava (Fanny) |
On opening night, the jitters were palpable. But, the problems were few and from the audience perspective, probably not visible. We did not have enough attendees, which gave it an intimate feel, as though we were performing for family and friends.
I always tell my fans NOT to come on opening night. I'd rather they see me when I feel more polished.
Last night our audience grew a bit. Nastassia's boyfriend was in the audience, and after her first couple of scenes, he texted to say how splendidly we and she were doing. Nice to hear from friends from backstage, when it's positive news.

After the show, my friend Matin sent for me from the lobby. She has been following my career, and she's my hairdresser. (The fantasy is that my star will rise and one day I'll be able to afford her to accompany me wherever I am on set.) She gave me a rave review and said her niece, who had come with her, loved the play, too. They are from Iran, and I feel that culturally, the French port city of Marseille in the 1930s resonates with them.
As for the French market, so far, it's quite small and intimate. Not that many vendors signed up, after all. There's some interesting pottery and the scent of lavender permeates the air.
Oh, I know: you really want to see a photo of me, now, right? Well - let's hope someone takes a good one soon!
