"Always get married early in the morning. That way, if it doesn't work out, you haven't wasted a whole day." Andy Rooney
Born
in a Brooklyn tenement, the son of a Scotsman and an American, Joseph Yule, Jr., became
actor, singer, dancer and consummate entertainer, Mickey Rooney. “I’ve
been working all my
life," he said, "but it seems longer.” In his 93 years, he made more than 200 movies. Was nominated for five Emmys. Won one. Had eight wives, including actress Ava Gardner. Was divorced six times. Had nine children and 19 grandchildren. Was just over 5 ft. tall. His 1991 autobiography was entitled Life is Too Short.
Mickey Rooney lived a fascinating life of ups and downs, wins and losses. After troubles with women, booze, gambling, and the IRS, among other issues, he became a born-again Christian. Near the end, he made a dramatic appearance before the Senate Special Committee on Aging, as part of an effort to curb elder abuse. He alleged that his stepson Christopher
Aber and Mr. Aber’s wife, Christina, had withheld food
and medicine and forced him to sign over his assets.
He later filed suit against them, settling in 2013: the
Abers agreed they owed him $2.8 million.
What kept Mickey Rooney going? A love of performing. “Growing up in vaudeville made me cognizant of the need to have fun at what you’re doing.
You can’t get it done well without it being fun. And I’ve never felt
that what I do is ‘work.’ ”
