About a week ago, I found the notes for "Le Tourbillon de la Vie" by ear on the baby grand at my 96-year-old mother's retirement residence.
They have dozens of pianos there. Now I can play the entire thing...okay, it's a bit shaky for the high notes, but I have my own chords down and lots of workarounds. How long will it take me to emulate my long-deceased brilliant relative, Carmen McRae (my grand-aunt's husband's niece...boy, you have to be an anthropologist to figure this one out, I know!)? A lifetime, perhaps, and, yeah, I'm starting a bit late...But, oh, man, what fun!
(Side note: my amazing and talented mother used to babysit for baby Carmen in NYC.)

Do you know who Carmen McRae was? Of course, you probably grew up hearing her amazing, rich, and honestly sultry original voice on all the cool jazz stations!

Carmen McRae passed away much too young at 74. May she rest in peace. I miss her.
