A Grand and Raucous Audience

They rooted for the good guys and booed the bad guys tonight at "Firstborn" at the Black Rep in Berkeley. What an amazing crowd! This is what it must have been like to perform for an audience in olden times. Director Tiffany Golden's parents, both of them pastors, were there, as were many of her cousins and the mother and grandmother and big sisters of the two little girls who play in my scene with one of my three characters, Sister Jackie. My colleague from the Silicon Valley day job, Eric was there and took photos. My pals Kathleen and her boyfriend Tom, who lives just steps from the theater, were there, as was my good friend from North Beach, Diane, and her friend, and an actress I met at a recent corporate shoot, Pat. What a turnout!

I admit that after all the expenditure of energy, all the knitting together of scenes, all the work, all the humbling and exuberant moments, the thing that really got me, as Character Actress Launching, into my second year in this life, was being asked for my autograph. What a hoot!

Tech was much improved tonight. After the show, there was videotaping of audience members as they streamed into the lobby. A lot of energy, a lot going on. A great place to be!

Plus, I really learned this pure and simple acting lesson tonight: Clarence whispered in my ear, in the wings: "You gotta own them. They do not own you!"

This run closes tomorrow. There will be Q&A after the show.

Next: Will we get to take "Firstborn" on the road?
