Tonight my friend Jeanne Pimentel, who has never forgotten her early training as an actress at the BBC school in London, invited me to see her perform in a staged reading of Sir Noel Coward's one-act play, "Come Into the Garden, Maud," part of a trilogy he published in the 1960's, which was produced for television. Maud is a naughty Italian lady in her 40's who seduces the wealthy, married American whose wife treats him really shabbily.
Lovely dinner graciously served, as usual, at the Women's Faculty Club, an environment resonant of another age. Speaking of which - most of tonight's actors were of a certain age and older than the play's characters, yet they were ideal in their roles. Good acting and great writing know no age boundaries.
A few memorable quotes for actors by Sir Noel Coward:
"Just say the lines and don't trip over the furniture."
"Work is much more fun than fun."
"I love criticism just so long as it's unqualified praise."
