Tuesday's Child

"Firstborn" feels like it's abirthin' now. Tonight we had a fuller crew and much progress was made on the theater space and the new set. Klara, our producer, was there in full force and working hard. Tandiwe's set was coming together and the risers have been built. Disconcerting note: having flats built and hammering and drilling going on during rehearsals, before the lighting and sound booth folks had arrived. But, Tiffany pushed us through. I found myself picking up nails and warning the actors and Tiffany about protecting their feet. Yes, as I predicted, one of the actresses did manage to step on a thumbtack. Ouch!

Our wardrobe mistress, Margot, seems pleased, too, and she made sure we have our clothing properly organized. Tandiwe got behind the props and Klara explained that we now have a proper props table in the green room, and there will be another one backstage. Yes! Someone up there may actually be reading this blog...

I brought my orange oil to combat the ants, but when I arrived, found that the ladies' room in the women's dressing room, where I had observed their march last night, was now inhabited by one of the theater employees, busily painting the walls a bright yellow. Nice! Well, then, there were the paint fumes that got a few of us a bit nauseous, mixed with the fumes from a can of oil spray one of the actors used to get rid of the door creaking. Three steps forward, two steps back. But, hey, we are making progress. Only got through one and a half scenes tonight, but there were no apparent wardrobe malfunctions. And, happily, my new wardrobe items have been approved, and Sister Jackie now has 3 outfits.

Tonight we also had Cynthia, a documentarian, recording parts of rehearsal.

Wednesday will be the last night before previews night, and previews night will be our first full run through. It's definitely a thrill a minute at the Black Rep.
