Home safely tonight. I say that because, in addition to my hazardous daily commute to Silicon Valley, I am also finding it a bit perilous to be on stage these days. This one is narrow, and I have several moments close to the edge. And, I don't want to look down! An actress should only look up or across. Then there's the fight scene....I suggested we move it a bit back from the edge, and we did.
Clarence Johnson, Jr. (Eli) is a powerful, muscular man, though not large, and another character and I have to involve ourselves in some physicality with him in a brutal scene. Because of my injured and recoverning arm, I am approaching this with a bit of delicatesse.
Director Tiffany Golden always asks the actors how we feel after she reblocks a scene. There was a lot of reblocking tonight. Tomorrow is dress rehearsal. The set is still being created. There is excitement in the air. Also, perhaps, a bit of disappointment among us at the loose ends still to be tied and the ever evolving state of the theater itself. But, one thing for sure - the cast is tight. We all work beautifully together, communicate openly, and genuinely have fun.
Eduardo Soler, my photographer, came tonight and did a ton of coverage of the rehearsal. He worked quietly and efficiently, and it felt like he was even digging the play. Can't wait to see the link he will provide us so we can view the images.
Tomorrow, dress rehearsal, will be the first time we will run through the entire newly cut and reframed play! And, also the first time I'll meet Tiffany's young cousins who will play two girls accompanying my character, Sister Jackie.
