Not much has been happening in my acting career lately. You've noticed? This is not about doom, despair, or even failure. When you support yourself as a technical writer/editor in the expensive Bay Area and most of the acting gigs of interest are in LA - well, that pretty much says it all. Not that there aren't occasional professional auditions here. For example, last week, I went to the audition - sent by my agent - for a major bank looking for a good narrator/host type to explain their new health plans to employees. I thought I would be perfect for the role - well, depending on how I looked on camera that day. I was called upon to read pages of script and got through it all with only one flub, in one take. I asked to do the wrap-up again, and was given that latitude. Nope, haven't heard. (And, that's when one wonders....Am I getting too old for this kind of role, say, without a little chin and neck work? Other self criticism abounds, but I won't go there now.)
Meanwhile, I am teaching editing at the local university, and that locks me into a weekend teaching and weekly prep schedule, too. Fortunately, the performance muscle gets a bit of a workout in teaching. There is flexibility in my schedule, and I will work things out when the right potential role comes along. But, the truth is, most SFCasting and LACasting roles these days are either for reality shows, student films, low- or non-paying feature films, or internet series, or plain ole extra work. My agent hasn't gotten calls for much lately, or I haven't been invited to the party. It seems almost impossible to break out of this little loop of low-ball project work right now.
