Petaluma Angel

So now the wait begins. It ends Saturday. I thought the audition for the staged reading to be performed during the Dia de los Muertos celebration in October, "Real Women Have Curves," with cool actor/director Joe Peer in Petaluma went really well. There were three young Latina women and myself at tonight's audition, and the director's associate at the arts center was also called upon to read one role for a few minutes. Joe really put us through our paces. We each read for at least two roles, and we repeated our readings, almost like a Greek chorus, several times, in sequence. Joe explained that the value of doing that is that we would each gain comfort level with the text, and then would be more attuned to the context, the drama, the depth of the scenes. I agree. Very valuable exercise.

After everyone left he kept me there to read another scene.

Joe is an attractive man who loves women. You can tell. He said we all reminded him of his aunts.

The play, which was made into a movie several years ago and plays on HBO, calls for the ability to speak rapidly in English and Spanglish. I am so aware of the differences in Puerto Rican vs. Mexican Spanglish, since I'm an old-time New Yorker. If I get a part in this one, I will be driving down to L.A. to listen to folks, if I possibly can.

My great-grandmother Hannah lived a similar life to these women's, in another country, in another time, and died at 33 from all her hardships. She was the angel who sat on my shoulder during this two-hour audition.
