I rarely venture into film criticism and only mention actors and actresses I work with, unless discussing my own little parts and humble low-budget auditions, fun stage roles, and shorts, and, oh, yes, the obits.
"The Kids Are All Right" by Lisa Cholodenko (co-written with Stuart Blumberg) is definitely a special movie. A movie! Not a film. A movie! So much is modern, which we filmgoers have been awaiting (so not sci-fi!), and so much is about how terrifically the brilliantly cast leads, Annette Bening and Julianne Moore portray their gay duo, Mom and Mom. All the actors are fine, the story, amazingly, based as it is on "an idea" (sperm donor discovers who his family has become because the kids want to meet him) hangs together like a hyper reality trip into our era, yet shot in past tense.
See this movie. My guess is that the floodgates have now opened for every kind of family saga, no matter the sexual proclivities or gender issues or psycho-relevance portrayed. We will see more modern families as they are or can be imagined, and more great storytelling by crafty weavers of tales.
Why is this important to character actress launching? I believe this means there will be more intelligent roles for quirky, not young, women like myself.
By the way - Did you hear I am looking for a SERIOUS AGENT?
