I showed up, as requested, in character today in San Francisco, at the audition for the clinical training video. I wore navy-blue plastic loafers, an old torn black turtleneck sweater, un-ironed, and a short denim jacket that did not match an above-the-knee denim skirt, somewhat modern for a woman of a certain age. My legs were nicely covered in pale pantyhose. It was raining when I left the house, so, as a precaution, I also wore a plain black raincoat and brought a red hat, the only way to protect newly ironed curly hair that was to look straight at the audition, at least for a couple of hours. I wanted my straight bangs to cover my brow, to help me "hide."
I also used, for the first time, my new black faux leather soft bag, formless, as pocket book, a gift from a good friend. I wore cheap, plain hoop earrings, not gold, not silver, somewhere in between. In case I needed props, I had thought, I'd better have on a ring and a bracelet....so, Miarin, from Dublin, Ireland, I wore that lovely silver bracelet you gave me decades ago, thank you!, and old photographer boyfriend from San Fran, I wore that quirky silver ring on my left pinkie, with its tiny diamond studs, gleaming into the videocam.
First thing I was asked to do was to walk into a room, as a client of this social services agency. My character drinks. She is 60. Lives alone. I used every iota of that to good effect, and created facts, like my missing son, lost ID. Then I was asked to interact with one of the therapists, walk again, into this room...Anyway, there was a lot of invention/improv.
By the time I got home, there was a message offering me this really interesting acting gig. We shoot in summer, several days. Not big money, but, with any luck, a great addition to my reel.
