My terrific shoot in Watsonville Monday was scheduled for 10 AM and I was supposed to be through by 12:30. Entertained my director, crew, and client by adlibbing a couple of extra lines to my character's script: she's the mean bill collector..." Whatsa mattah wid these people, anyway?" I said to camera, at one point. Lots of laughs. Three takes. My Joisey girllll....I did a lot of business with nail polish and lipstick, even popping my lips, as I applied lip gloss and said, "You betcha." Wish you could see this in context. Maybe by October? Grateful for my theater training.
I was in and out by 10:30. Had a bit of time, so headed over to Ross of Watsonville, and found nada, not even a decent bar of off-brand soap from Italy, and then for a cuppa Joe and read my email on the DroidX. Found out I was being invited to an audition by a serious company, for a major financial product, in Marina del Rey. Between my make-up, cosmetics, and changes of wardrobe, I could certainly pull it off. After all, I was 1/3 of the way there. Confirmed that I'd make it next afternoon. Headed down Hwy. 1, since I was on it already. Twists and turns took an extra hour of coastal sensation and bliss. Drove by the various sundry old retro metaphysical spaces, you know the ones, along the coast...and then I was at Hearst Castle, and then the quaint town of Cambria, passed all sorts of personal landmarks, and signs for towns I'll visit next, like Oceana, and then it was...oh, so sweet, and the weather, perfection.
Where would I stay? Santa Barbara? Ventura? Venice? No, I would head straight to the scene of the shoot, sleeping just about a mile away. I had no idea, really, but after getting lost and finding myself on Lincoln Avenue in Marina del Rey and at LAX, not my intention (a really difficult airport to leave for the tired and uninitiated!), I headed back to the marina and pulled into the driveway at 10 PM at the Marina del Ray Hotel. Yep, another classic. Got the last room and was able to order room service before they closed it down at 10:20. It worked out just fine.
Had the ideal swim in the morning. Their pool and the hotel are surrounded by the marina itself. Quite adorable to swim among the yachts, including two, moored, side-by-side, called, "Alone" and "Lisa." Populated by baby boomers and Eurotourists, no need to preen. This place is, shall we say, shabby-chic, and the staff aims to please.
An ideal audition today. My dear actress friend, if you're reading this...I was scheduled for 1:50 PM and by the time I did my audition, it must have been 2 PM. We will check out my success rate versus stats you have gathered.
