"The House of Blue Leaves" was performed tonight at the theater in partial costume, with most props, and no set yet. Generally our scenes were smooth, songs a bit off key, and blocking...well, er, let's work on that next time. Some of the cast was absolutely outstanding. Some of us were good at times, not so good other times...stay tuned for the photos we nuns took of each other in costume for the first time, in the dressing room. Creepy part? The costumes, rented, were not yet clean. Good part? Feeling what it really is like to dress as a nun! The cloth around your face and ears is very constricting, and your hearing is a bit muffled. Now that I know where my pockets and secret places are, I have a few ideas, heh-heh.
All our costumes were too long, and I imagine it's because they are usually worn by men in a local show. Remember, I live in the Gay Area, as my friend once coined it. Can't wait to see my enormous crucifix the costume designer promised me, as Head Nun.
Maureen, the Second Nun, looks so classically blue-eyed and round-faced Irish and sings "Ave Maria" just right. Sukanya, the Little Nun, a glamorous Indian from Delhi with huge eyes and cut figure, steals the show in the second act, Scene 2, when she gets totally involved with the real worlds of seduction and filthy lucre.
Wish you could all see this show! It stands the test of time, John Guare. You were so prescient to have written this story, my man. Thank you!
