Thursday Night - Levels of Acting and Time

Showed up for my 6 PM rehearsal on "OWL" tonight - having left my busy office in Silly Valley at 4 so the traffic would be less dense. Almost fell asleep at the wheel on 101 North. This always scares me. Collected myself at the little corner cafe on Treat Street in SF with a double iced coffee and one chocolate chip cookie. Arrived to park right in front of our rehearsal space at 5 to 6, got out of car at 6 and entered. Was told by the dance space owner, there with a client, that our director would be late. He was.

Bernard worked me on the Evangelist character. I found it productive, though I strained my vocal chords, not having warmed up properly. Not sure why directors think they need us to push so hard during rehearsals. We actors need to hold back in the beginning, even in the middle, I think, and give our power to the real deal. I guess they don't trust their own casting sometimes.

Our Artistic Director arrived about an hour late, in time for my second character, the Businesswoman, and our rehearsal. A lot of soggy-friendly back and forth among the two directors and another actress, who is also our wardrobe mistress, and public relations writer...I stood, back straight, holding script, maybe for 30 minutes before I got to do this second scene. They worked me. Glad I wore comfortable shoes. Interesting to have two young dudes directing us. So far, they seem to agree on stuff. It's all very organic. They feel it. They say it. They take breaks. Now I understand how actresses can become prima donas. Not a bad technique...

Left about 8:30, an hour and a half later than planned or scheduled, but still glad to get home before sunset. I was not in such a great mood when I got home. Feelin' a bit testy, moi.
